Special Education

Right To Education–special Education For Special Persons

Every individual has the right to have a formal education. And to those who have the incapability, it seems that it is hard for them to achieve education if they have to go with the same methods done in traditional schooling. That is why special education is introduced. Special education is another kind of educational system which is intended to provide the needs of individuals who have physical and mental disabilities such as physical handicaps, sensory (visual and hearing) impairments, intellectual incapacity (psychological retardation and autism), learning disabilities speech impairment and those with behavioral disorders like ADHD.

Special education is not an alternative to traditional school because it only provides unconventional learning primarily accessible for the special ones. Schools that offer special education seek to address some problems of each individual. They also provide useful and efficient ways for the special persons to live a normal life as much as they can through a set of formulated and systematized instructions, service aid, assistance and supports, unique and different learning techniques and adequate transitions services.

Primarily, the objective of special education is to grant the special needs of these special children, youth and adults and to ensure that they have the chance to equal access to quality education regardless of their condition for the betterment of their future. As a result, it makes their perspective in life more positive and very opposite to what they have been experiencing throughout their lives. It will make them enthusiastic and encourages those people more to keep up and to level the challenges of a standard education. With these points of views, it will increase their chance of success in life apart from the disabilities they have.

The Special education focuses on how to effectively provide support and learning so as to improve their comprehension skills. Usually these types of people have hidden talents that need to be discovered forcefully through different activities. When they are properly educated in the most learning-conducive atmosphere, their in-depth skills may be uncovered naturally as well as their extraordinary abilities hidden behind the disabilities.

However, not all can be given with this special type of education. The person must undergo different stages of evaluations and tests before they can avail the special education services. It may depend on the level of disabilities of the individual. The processes they need to take will vary and some basic stages referral, parental and the student evaluation. Reviews and recommendations of appropriate institutionalized methods may also be needed for them to qualify.

In present, more or less six million children, youth and adults are suffering from disabilities. Thus, the demand for special education services has increased unexpectedly. With these circumstances, the number of schools offering special education has also amplified by leaps and bounds.

With proper guidance and dealings with the issues and concerns in regards on finding the right solutions, Special education is a special way to not discern the people of disabilities with the normal ones. It is one way of showing the respect and letting them know that they have the equal right to education. It is the special way of giving them the chance to stand up on their own for their future and be on equal footing with their friends and even foes. Hence, Special education draws out the true potentials of the special people as prime contributors and responsible citizen of the society regardless of their mental and physical drawbacks.

How Special Educators Make a Difference

Special education is an often overlooked and under-appreciated element of the larger education sector. Often, people correlate an education degree with grade school, high school or college teaching and administration. But there are a number of other equally important areas of teaching and education, like special education, that give service-minded individuals an opportunity to make a positive and lasting difference in students’ lives.

J.T. Watts is one teacher who chose a career in special education. In his 41 years teaching special education, Watts helped children with varying learning disabilities and, he says, they helped him too. Many of the students Watt’s taught had dyslexia, a disability that causes people to reverse both words and letters.

Dyslexia is only one example of a learning disability.

Special education teachers often help students with disorders that affect intake, processing, comprehension and retaining of information. Watts’ approach was to help increase his students self-esteem by teaching them methods of overcoming their confusion with words and letters. Watts implemented a strict memorization regimen of multiplication tables and state capitals. His students become so efficient that they were eventually able to compete with their teacher. Says Watts, “I did get beat one time on state capitals. I made a careless mistake and the students didn’t miss any. He never let me forget about it, either.”

Special educators, like Watts, employ a number of different methods when teaching special education students.

Modifying the curriculum to best fit a student’s personal learning needs is a popular and successful tactic. When asked about the perks of his job, Watts replied, “I think it is the most difficult and stressful job in education. In the special education field, the teacher turnover is really high. But it is very fulfilling. It’s just worth it to see them progress. When the lights turn on, you can see it in their eyes when they start believing in themselves and say ‘Hey, I can do this. I’m OK.’”

Online Education Classes Make Special Education Easy

The world of education is a vast one, with differing specialties and age groups. In all grade levels of education, however, specialized teachers are needed to help students that require extra attention due to a learning or behavioral disability. Some more common ones include speech or language impairments to the more severe cases such as traumatic brain injuries. A teacher that has taken online education classes, or even traditional classes, that offers a degree in remedial education opens the doors to many more opportunities in the job market. With more focus on teachers than ever before and the need for more as our population continues to grow, those that have added degrees give themselves a competitive edge over those that do not. Not only that, special ed can be a very rewarding career, since the education of a student with disabilities relies solely with the teacher trained to help them.

The levels of education that a special ed teacher can get range from a bachelor’s to a doctoral level. In order to teach special education, a bachelor’s degree is needed and the associated state license to practice as well. In addition to this preliminary step, a lot of teachers continue their education through to at least their master’s degree so that they can give the best to their students. Additionally, this puts the teacher on track for more pay and even tenure. Many school districts actually require remedial education teachers to continue their education through an online or traditional mode of study. The field of special education can change quickly as new scientific breakthroughs are implemented into teaching methods. On average, a special education teacher makes about ,000 annually and the top-tier can make up to ,000. This ranges for the grade level, school district and the amount of education that the teacher has in the field.

It takes a lot of patience and perseverance to be aspecial education teacher, since the progress may seem slow and some students may be harder to handle than others. Yet, the rewards are incredible. In most cases, the class size is substantially smaller than other normal classrooms, which affords a lot more one-on-one time with the student. Close bonds are formed and can last through other grade levels. If you work in a smaller school, you may even have the same student for a number of years if you are only one of a few special education teachers there. Online education classes offer a great way to earn a higher degree in this field, while affording the teacher the time to continue to work with their students. This might be a great option for someone who lives in a more rural area, where the need is higher for special education teachers, but the resources for a more advanced degree are further away.
